Devlog #1: My initial ideas for this game
Hello to whoever may be reading this!
I have been into game development for a couple years, however, outside of the GMTK Game Jam this year, I have never finished a game. At the end of this video by ThatGuyGlen on how Rain World was made, there is a quote from the developer Joar Jakobsson basically saying that his dev log was key to keeping himself motivated. So, I thought I might try it out, seems like fun and maybe I'll get to hear what other people think about my game.
Anyway, as for the actual game, I think it is going to be something of a turn-based dungeon crawler. (A bit like Rogue I believe, though I haven't actually played the game, only heard about it.) It is set in a world that has been cursed such that humans are no longer able to reproduce. Consequently, necromancers have become an integral part of society, now that raising the dead is the only way to increase the population of abled bodies and minds. The player's main goal is to collect the corpses of perished adventurers and bring them back to "base" to sell.
Instead of fighting enemies, you will more often than not have to sneak past, outrun or outsmart them, since these monsters have killed many an adventurer before fragile little you. Like Rain World, I hope. Once you have successfully returned, various necromancers and necromantic guilds will make offers for your "loot". However, there may be times where morality becomes a serious consideration, like in Papers, Please. You need to buy food so you have energy for tomorrow, but is it worth it if it means handing over the corpse of a powerful mage to a necromancer who's only goal is to enslave the local populace?
For the art style, I will go for something really minimal, similar to a game called He Is Coming. I am okay with pixel art, but it isn't my favourite part of making games, to be honest.
Okay, I think that is it for this first introduction. I need to start actually working on the game now, haha. I'll start of with the map and some movement and tomorrow I will make another post with a screenshot of how everything is coming along.
See ya!
