Devlog #24: More UI for corpses

Hi, spent a bit of time on corpse UI today, namely the button to add it to the players inventory. From left to right: what it normally looks like, when you are hovering you mouse over the button, and when your corpse capacity is full.

As you can see, the corpse tile is greyed out when the player has already 'looted' that tile. Also, you can choose to leave it behind if you just walk off the tile, but I might also add a "Leave" button to make it more obvious you can do that.

Next thing to do is the inventory UI for the corpses the player has already picked up. I think I will do a column of symbols that show the class of adventurer they were (fighter, wizard etc.) with colours to show how strong they were. Naturally, stronger corpses will sell for more money. The player will be able to hover over them to see more detail and this will also include a way to drop corpses to make room for new ones.

Also, I am just thinking about the 'lore' behind the game mechanics. When the player runs out of health, I don't want them to die and have to restart. I think maybe it would be better if the monsters just took the opportunity to eat the corpses they had picked up and leave the player, maybe because they are some sort of being that doesn't appeal to them. At that point, I could also just remove health and every time the player is attacked, there is a percentage chance for them to lose one of their corpses, based on the relative strength levels. Or I could just remove strength as well and have a flat rate.

However, this raises the question of why would the monsters wait until the player has picked them up, when they have been lying on the ground for however long? The answer could be related to why the monsters don't attack the player. What if the bodies were under some sort of magical protection and only the player had the power to break through it? I don't really know why they would be under such protection, but I think I could think of something. Perhaps this area is the battlefield from a war ages past where an artefact was used to strengthen the combatants, and thus their bodies have been preserved by the residual effects of that magic that imbues them even in death? Maybe, could be cool.

If you happen to get past the ugly screenshots (I promise the final result will be much better haha) and read this, let me know what you think.
See ya!
